What is BS5852?

- Dec 14, 2017 -

BS5852 is a British furniture fire protection standard, using flannel and wood shelf as the testing tool, and the whole test is divided into four parts, usually we take the first two parts only. Take the cigarette and use acetylene flame to simulate matches for testing. Basically using a lighter to burn vertically on the surface of the textile for 20 seconds, a few seconds after leaving the flame, if the blaze died out automatically then it can reach the standard

Schedule4 PartI  Cigarette combination test of visible cover

Indoor furniture except mattresses, bed bases, cushions and pillows must be carried out through a cigarette combination test

The flame-retardant covering must be soaked in the water at 40 centigrade for 30 minutes firstly. And this test adopt the method of the BS5852PART1 cigarette fire. The filler is non flame retardant polyurethane foam which conforms to BS3379B standard.

Evaluation criterion: within 1 hours of placing a cigarette, once there are open fire or smoke, flashing and other flaming phenomena occur at any time. If the above phenomenon occurs, this visible cover can not pass the test, if not, then it can pass.

Schedule5Part1  Simulated match test of visible cover

The flame-retardant covering must be soaked in the water at 40 centigrade for 30 minutes firstly. The simulated match test adopt the method of the BS3379B butane fire source simulating matches. The filler is non flame retardant polyurethane foam which conforms to BS3379B standard.

Evaluation criterion: after 2 minutes of removal of the fire source, there is still a flame or smoke, flash and other flaming phenomena. If the above phenomenon occurs, this visible cover can not pass the test, if not, then it can pass.

Schedule4PartII cigarette combination test of invisible cover

The invisible cover does not need to be soaked, whether it passed the fire proofing or not. This test adopt the method of the BS5852PART1 cigarette fire, for the filler,we should choose the foam of which density is 24-26kg/m³and has passed Schedule1Part1 test.

The evaluation criterion are the same as Schedule4PartI the cigarette test of visible cover.

Schedule5PartII  Simulated match test of invisible cover

The invisible cover does not need to be soaked, whether it passed the fire proofing or not. . This test adopt the method of the BS5852PART1 Butane Fire Source simulating matches. For the filler,we should choose the foam of which density is 24-26kg/m³and has passed Schedule1Part1 test.
